Project Portaiture
For this project, we looked at Photographers Marie Smith and Tami Smith, artists behind 'Whispering For Help' and 'The Dog's In The Car'
Marie Smith's project 'Whispering for Help' brings light to mental health issues, specifically in marginalized communities, such as women of colour. After her research, she found that due to racism, stereotypes and discrimination, people of colour and other marginalized communities were often mistreated or ignored by the NHS and Mental Health services, so she decided to share her platform as a photographer to bring these issues to the surface, letting women of colour speak about their personal experiences with mental health. Tami Aftab's project 'The Dog's In the Car' focuses on her and her family bringing light humour to a dark situation, after her father having short term memory loss due to a surgery. They would often leave notes around their house as constant reminders for him, and she decided to make these public and worked with her father to create more pieces linking to her theme. |

Taking it further
Using the ideas of both Marie Smith and Tami Aftab, i went home to create my own pieces. I decided i wanted to use black and white, similar to Marie Smith, and focused the images around mental health. I collaborated with my mother, especially since she has had issues with Mental Health throughout her life so far.
My mother has diagnosed depression, as well as anxiety, PTSD and other mental health issues.
